In April 2013: Selfridges celebrated the opening of a new Marni Kidswear concept on the fourth floor of its London store. The interior concept, designed exclusively for Selfridges for the brand and unlike any other stockist of the collection, houses the most comprehensive offer of Marni Kidswear in Europe.

Lynne Crook, Buying Manager for Childrenswear, comments: “Since introducing Marni for SS13 it’s quickly become one of our strongest-performing collections, and one which our shoppers are incredibly excited about. A significant number of our shoppers are mums who also shop at Selfridges for themselves, so those directional fashion brands which resonate with them– Marni being a perfect example – are going from strength to strength for us.”
The playful, retro-inspired Marni collection express the brand’s love for graphic prints, bold brights and 60’s inspired pussy-bow ties. For girls aged 2 – 12, hooded parkas with check wool linings, polka dot rain capes and striped jersey T-shirts and dresses all feature in the line. Fabrics come in cotton, cashmere, silk crepe, wool and washed taffeta.

The prints contain signature patterns of the Marni style such as hearts, florals, polka-dots and contrasting stripes. The colour palette is essential with unexpected peaks such as notes of blue, red and yellow and then dashes of white, light grey, pink and acid yellow. Clothes and shoes from Marni Children SS13 collection are available to buy in store and online from Selfridges.com.

CATWALK CUTIES: There were almost as many tots in the audience as there were on the catwalk for the first ever Global Kids’ Fashion Week (GKFW) in London last Tuesday. Launched by AlexandAlexa.com, the online kidswear retailer, the invitation-only event saw Camilla Rutherford, Jemma Kidd, Jodie Kidd, Portia Freeman and their progeny on the front row at the first of two shows in the two-day event.
The key children’s wear trends for fall/winter 2013’s were showcased via creations from over 30 established and emerging designers, including Kenzo, Roberto Cavalli, Oscar de La Renta, Billie Bush, Mini A Ture and Issosy, on diminutive models that walked skipped, danced and cartwheeled down the runway at Freemason’s Hall.

No fashion week is complete without the obligatory after party so, for GKFW, the Lodge room was transformed into a children’s playland with a giant bubble machine, a manicure bar for little fingers from LittleBU, a photo booth and a popcorn vendor. It seems that fashion shows aren’t just for the ready-to-wear crowd anymore. “I don’t think [kidswear] is recognized enough, especially with the lesser known and emerging designers,” said model Freeman. “Since having my son, I’ve entered the word of children’s fashion and I love it!”

While Tuesday’s media and VIP event showcased coming trends for next season, Wednesday’s consumer show highlighted current spring/summer 2013 trends from brands including Rachel Riley, Munster Kids, Finger in the Nose, Billieblush and Mishka Aoki to ticket-buying members of the public, with the proceeds thereof going to the charity Kids Company.

With Romeo Beckham appearing in the current Burberry campaign, blogs dedicated to Suri Cruise’s style, designers angling to dress Harper Beckham and fashion watchers eyeing-up Blue Ivy Carter’s wardrobe, it was only a matter of time before a fashion week was dedicated to kidswear. That time is now.

“The time felt right to launch GKFW this year, to showcase children’s fashion in its own right and celebrate this thriving industry,” AlexandAlexa.com founder Alex Theophanous told WWD. “Since AlexandAlexa.com was founded five years ago, we’ve watched the children’s fashion industry grow and evolve in to a stand-alone category with its own trends and creative milestones.

“Each year another mainline designer branches out into kidswear — from Chloe’s ‘mini me’ girls collection launched in 2007, which is the current favorite of Harper Beckham, to Stella McCartney for Kids in 2010, which is one of AlexandAlexa.com’s best sellers. Alongside these global and established brands, we’ve seen emerging and independent children’s designers make their mark in the industry and gain a cult following — parents love discovering fresh new brands and we find they spend as much time hunting online for those unique kids’ outfits as they do for their own wardrobes.”

The two-day event is being funded by AlexandAxela.com, with production and styling costs for the shows being partially covered by the brands participating. “We have created a stand-alone brand [GKFW], which we aim to roll-out annually, or even seasonally, following our feedback and experiences with the debut event,” said Theophanous.

Mini hipsters in the United States had an opportunity to strut their stuff this past weekend on a New York City runway as part of the semi-annual kid’s fashion week sponsored by petitePARADE and Vogue Bambini. The shows featured a wide variety of kids’ fashion including pieces by Pale Cloud, Cupcakes & Pastries, Diesel, Bonnie Young, Sperry’s, Miss Blumarine, and Reina Mora, just to name a few.

Trends that we saw for girls included high socks, high-low hems, and funky sneakers. Pairing fun girly styles with more edgy and funky pieces was a popular trend amongst the girls on the runway.

This outfit represents the girly girl with a funky edge. This Los Angeles designer launched “Cupcakes & Pastries” in 2009. (above)

For boys, beanies and hats, funky sneakers and boots, and unique graphic tees were all seen on the runway.

The crowds at the shows were filled with moms (and dads!), celebrities, designers, and many stylish young men and women! June Ambrose (pictured sitting front row with her son Chance and daughter Summer)- is a celebrity stylist who has styled clients including Missy Elliot, Jay Z, Will Smith, and Alicia Keys.

A few of the pint-sized attendees are pictured below.

The adorable children seen on the runway are represented by some of the top modeling agencies in New York such as Wilhelmina and Generations Model Management.

This young model named Kylie is also a cast member of TLC’s hit reality TV show, “Toddlers and Tiaras”. (below)

For most active adults, Lululemon is their Go-To brand. But what about active kids? Lululemon’s new line for active kids called Ivivva launched in 2009. Ivivva has the same quality standards as Lululemon and is designed for active children ages 6-12.

The clothes are designed specifically for a wide variety of sports including gymnastics, volleyball, and yoga. The first Ivivva retailer opened in Canada. In 2012 they opened their first store in the United States. The prices are slightly lower than Lululemon yet the quality and excellence that the brand stands for remains the same. Send your mini hipster off to practice in style with their shorts, tanks, sports bras, and leotards!

Cult Brand KSUBI have teamed up with Target in Australia to release a mini me version of their brand. It’s just as authentic and individual as the grown ups with foil skirts and rock and roll shirts. Centered around the frivolity of being a kid, Ksubi Kid for Target offers a unique and tongue in cheek approach to kids fashion. Could this be a “dipping their toe in the water” for a stand alone kids collection?

This limited edition collection can be shopped online at Target. We have pulled out some of our favourites below.
