MADE-BY is an independent consumer label for fashion companies who continuously improve and are transparent about the social, economic and ecological conditions throughout the whole supply chain of their collections.
The mission of MADE-BY is to make sustainable fashion common practice, which gives consumers the assurance that a brand produces with respect for people and planet to its best efforts.

MADE-BY is an independent consumer label for fashion companies who continuously improve and are transparent about the social, economic and ecological conditions throughout the whole supply chain of their collections it also assists suppliers in achieving social or environmental certification and in sourcing sustainable materials such as organic cotton by means of the MADE-BY network of farmers, spinners and fabric supplier

Since 2006, MADE-BY garments ware all identified by a blue button near the care label. This label says something about the quality of the garment; the button says something about the quality of the manufacturing process. If you see it, you will then know that the brand produces its collections in a people- and environment-friendly way. Do you support this method of creating fashion? If so, help promote the button. Order one now, sew it on and show it.

Brands that join MADE-BY are committed to produce their collections as sustainable as possible. This can’t be realized for the whole collection in one go, but is done by making step by step improvements in cooperation with MADE-BY. Meanwhile, the brands are as open as possible about their production and show their sustainability progress and results. At the end of each calendar year, the progress that the brands are making in the areas of the environment and labour are translated into scorecards.

The scorecards show the percentage of clothes produced by socially certified suppliers, the percentage of organic cotton used during the past year, and how sustainable the materials that the brand used are. In addition the amount of organic cotton used in kilo’s is displayed. The scorecards cover a period of one year, from the 1st of January until the 31st of December. Only the scorecards of brands that were a member of MADE-BY during that entire period are published.
Of brands that have been a MADE-BY member for less than one calendar year, insufficient data is available to create scorecards that cover the whole year, but the brand’s progress and projects that were started are still published. Here are some of the brands using “Made-By”.

In search of a natural alternative for her baby, Purebaby founder, Mirabai Winford sourced one of the world’s most pure forms of organic cotton and thus Purebaby was born. Each Purebaby piece is soft and comfortable – easy to wear, beautifully designed and beautifully organic. What is also interesting about this brand is that it is leading the way in sustainable fashion production by becoming the first ever Australian business to join the global initiative, MADE-BY.

Products approved by MADE-BY must have evidence to show every stage of production uses environmentally-friendly materials, such as organic cotton, and are put together in factories with social codes of conduct, providing optimum working conditions for staff.  MADE-BY approved clothing is recognised by a blue MADE-BY button sewn onto the label. This will first appear in Purebaby’s Winter 2009 range and be available in stores from February. Ms Winford said Purebaby was taking part in a ‘tracking and tracing’ program in the future. “Our customers will be able to trace the manufacture of their garment online, from the farmer who produced the organic cotton right through to purchase,” she said. Each Purebaby piece is soft and comfortable – easy to wear, beautifully designed and beautifully organic.

A Little bit about Organic Cotton:
Organic cotton has been grown and processed without the use of harmful chemicals. Unlike conventional cotton, sustainable farming practices have been used to produce organic cotton without chemical pesticides, defoliants or fertilisers. These practices do not pollute ground or surface water, soil or air. Organic cotton is safer for farmers, for you, for your baby and for the environment. Organic cotton feels softer, smells cleaner and is less likely to trigger allergies.

Conventional cotton occupies only 3% of the world’s farmland, but uses 25% of the world’s chemical pesticides and fertilisers. Globally, international production of organic cotton was 6,368 metric tons, or in excess of 14million pounds. All grown without the use of harmful chemicals.

The chemicals used on conventional cotton are among the most toxic substances used in farming, the runoff from irrigation seeps into our drinking water and contaminates it. Organic farms respect our water resources by eliminating the use of chemicals that pollute. The primary focus is building healthy soils together with protecting and conserving water resources.

An estimated 25million people worldwide are poisoned by pesticides every year. Organic production reduces health risks by preventing harmful chemicals from getting into the air, earth and water that sustain us.

They may be too young to chain themselves to old growth trees or join the fight to save the whales, but the bubs in your life can take up the greenie cause by kitting themselves out in sustainable clothing. (And promising to invent the no-emission car when they’re older; but first things first, eh?)

EcoPeko is a new bubs clothing label featuring two styles of organic teeshirts. Eco Chic is a bold ’save the earth’ style tee that comes in natural or retro green. Each tee comes with a very cute, box shaped, hessian bag for eco kids to put their treasures into. Eco Babies range is a soft subtle style tee that comes in natural or sage. Each shirt has a lovely message and an organic cotton bag as ‘eco babies say no to plastic’.

This earth friendly fashion range is made from 100% Certified organic cotton, has a super high thread count (really soft stuff) and the knitting, stitching & dyeing processes are green from top to bottom, plus they even throw in a packet of organic seeds for you to start a veggie patch!

Its easy being green

Simple have developed a line of sustainable sneakers called ecoSNEAKS®.

In addition to looking great, the ecoSNEAKS collection uses materials like recycled car tires, certified organic cotton, eco certified suedes, PET (think recycled plastic bottles), recycled bike tires, hemp and are machine washable, just to name a few. So they a leave better ecological footprint than ordinary sneakers….(ok that last one isnt exaclty part of the “eco friendly” list, but being machine washable is number one on the parent friendly list!)

As part of the development process Simple wanted to make sure they wouldn’t leave behind any scuff marks, so they made up a blend of non-marking natural and recycled rubber, they are engineered to be soft and flexible – meaning more movement for growing feet, plus they are wide enough to fit chubby feet, which covers off most children from 0 – 3 years!

Is it just me or is it hard to find cool “comfy clothes” for kids?

If, like me, you are on the eternal search for a pair of groovy track pants, or complete “leisure suit” for junior that doesn’t scream “scratchy acrylic fabric from the 80s”, then Bornsage is for you.

The yoga pants are a favorite, matched with their kimono onesies and a reversible hoodie (both pictured), your child will be styling in no time!

Plus, all Bornsage clothing is made from 100% organic cotton and they adhere to the GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard – to ensure that their products are 100% organic and that the products are made with environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing.
